Twelve Dutch people have been evacuated due to the major fires on the Hawaiian island of Maui. They were traveling with the Dutch travel agency Exit Reizen. The tourists were taken to another island yesterday or left for home. Four Germans were also evacuated by the travel agency.
The tourists were not endangered by the fires and were able to leave the island safely. The travel agency had advised tourists to leave the island in order to avoid a possible emergency and to relieve local emergency services. The travelers themselves all wanted to leave, says Exit Reizen.
All trips for the coming week have also been canceled as a precaution. It specifically concerns the island of Maui; there are still Dutch tourists on the other Hawaiian islands.
Dozens dead
Wildfires have been raging on Maui for several days, killing at least 55 people. Dozens have also been injured. Parts of the island have been reduced to ashes, including the historic city of Lahaina, which has been completely destroyed.
Fires of this magnitude are rare in Hawaii. The fires were able to grow so large due to a very dry summer and strong winds from Hurricane Dora. A state of emergency has been declared on the archipelago.
