The last US military aircraft has officially left Kabul airport, Afghanistan. The last flight of the military aircraft also marked the end of the US evacuation process for its citizens and Afghans from the group Taliban.
As reported by AFP, Tuesday (31/8/2021), the US military withdrawal also marks the end of the 20-year war in Afghanistan that has cost billions of dollars. Not only that, celebratory gunfire rang out in Kabul in the early hours of Tuesday, and jubilant senior Taliban officials hailed the event as a defining moment.
The last flight reportedly departed at 1929 GMT Monday – just before early Tuesday in Kabul. The last flight came before the final deadline set by President Joe Biden, which was the end of August 31.
“I am here to announce the completion of our withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the military mission to evacuate Americans,” US General Kenneth McKenzie told reporters Monday Washington time.
“Tonight’s withdrawal marks the end of the military component of evacuation but also the end of a nearly 20-year mission that began in Afghanistan shortly after September 11, 2001,” he continued.
Biden also said he would address the nation on Tuesday in Washington about the end of the evacuation.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson Taliban Zabihullah Mujahid said Afghanistan had “gained full independence” with the US withdrawal. Meanwhile Anas Haqqani, a senior Taliban official, said he was “proud” to witness “this historic moment”.
