It was one of the biggest upsets for dog lovers on social media in the last few weeks: In a post on Facebook, a dog owner told the story of a dog that she had brought to her home a few weeks earlier and thus saved from the killing station in his home country. But his fate should ultimately be the same in this country. Since he had behavioral problems and could potentially be a danger to people, she had to redeem him, according to the owner.
The fact that she was considering having the young dog euthanized for it caused horrified posts in the comment columns. The owner was dubbed a “murderer”, a user recommended calling in the veterinary office, and everyone seemed to agree: It is forbidden to euthanize a dog because of behavioral problems. However, a request to animal rights experts shows that the decision would not be punishable.
The Federal Animal Welfare Ordinance contains a number of regulations that are intended to ensure that animals are killed as gently and professionally as possible, says Gieri Bolliger, lawyer and manager of the Foundation for Animals in Law (TIR). For example, vertebrates may only be euthanized by qualified persons, i.e. by veterinarians.
