The summer in Malaga has always been a time for unusual encounters. Like the one in the sixties between the legendary Black Panther of the Portuguese national team, Eusebio, and the characteristic actor Fernando Sancho, an indispensable supporting actor in the ‘spaghetti-westerns’ of Almería. Without a trace of the Mexican hat and pistols that made him famous on the big screen, the actor from Zaragoza changed his popular character of a villain on horseback with an Aztec accent for hair gel and the role of a football fan to ask the no less legendary Eusebio for a signed photo, as appears in this image taken by Eugenio Griñán.
Eusebio also made his mark on the Rosaleda pitch, as the player participated with his team, Benfica, in the 1966 Costa del Sol International Trophy, living up to his fame and becoming the tournament’s great star. The summer championship aroused great attention due to its international profile, as the presence of the Portuguese team and the historic international star was joined by the English team Tottenham – FA Cup winners that same year –, Atlético de Madrid – the last winner of the Spanish League – and, of course, Málaga, as the host. The two foreign teams reached the final, although the victory ultimately went to the English. However, Eusebio did not disappoint and was the tournament’s top scorer with three goals that well deserved an autograph for Fernando Sancho.
