The temporary protection measures, which were introduced after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, would have expired in March 2024.
The European Council statement released after the meeting in Brussels said that such a decision was taken to “provide certainty to the more than four million Ukrainian refugees currently living in the EU”.
“The EU will support the people of Ukraine as long as it is necessary,” Spanish Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Fernando Grande Marlasca Gomes said in connection with the decision.
The EU reminds that within the framework of temporary protection measures, all Ukrainian refugees have the right to work in the EU, receive housing, medical assistance and social benefits, children must have access to education.
