In an article titled ‘A Cold Eye on China’ published in the French weekly magazine Le Journal du Dimanche on the 22nd (local time), CEO Borrell said, “(Taiwan) has an economic, commercial, and technological relationship with us.” “For this reason, we urge European navies to demonstrate their European commitment to ‘freedom of navigation’ in this absolute and crucial zone by patrolling the Taiwan Strait,” it said.

Borrell also stressed the importance of Taiwan in a China-related discussion held at the European Parliament on the 18th, saying, “Taiwan is an obvious part of our geopolitical strategic boundary for ensuring peace.” At the time, he explained the reason, saying, “Taiwan plays a strategic role in the production of cutting-edge semiconductors, so it can be very important to us from an economic point of view.”
