Eurovision Song Contest, when Toto Cutugno triumphed in 1990. Even if he shouldn’t have gone there …- Corriere.it

Before dei Måneskin the last winner of the Eurovision Song Contest for Italy was Toto Cutugno in 1990 with “Insieme: 1992”, a song dedicated to European unity following the fall of the Berlin Wall (an event that took place a few months ago that inspired many of the competing songs). At the time, the Eurovision Song Contest was still called the Eurovision Song Grand Prix: the final evening was held on May 5 in Zagreb, Croatia (at the time still Yugoslavia, the country of origin of Riva, the pop group that won the 1989 edition) and also curiously that year – as in 2021 – France came in second.

There wasn’t supposed to be …

And to think that our Toto at the 35th edition of the most famous and beloved singing competition in Europe should not even have participated: that year the Sanremo Festival was in fact won by the Poohs with “Only men” who, however, decided not to participate in the event. So in their place was called the runner-up, that is the singer-songwriter of “L’italiano” who, following the victory, would then present the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest in Rome together with the first Italian winner of the event, Gigliola Cinquetti (first place in 1964 with “I’m not old”).
