Another innovation of this year’s competition will be a longer voting time in the Grand Final.
On Saturday, May 11, voting will begin just before the first song is played. Audience members will be able to cast their votes while the songs are being played, rather than waiting until all the acts have finished, as has been the case since public voting was introduced in 1997 (except in 2010 and 2011, when voting also started at the beginning of the show).
Song Contest fans from non-participating countries will now have nearly 24 hours to vote for their favorite songs before each of the scheduled live shows begin. Voting will open to the rest of the world immediately after the second rehearsal of each semi-final and Grand Final (the so-called dress rehearsal), and will be open until the start of the live Grand Final.
Executive producer Eba Adielson describes these changes in more detail:
“Voting for the final will have already started before all 26 musicians have finished singing. We want to make it possible for the audience to be involved from the beginning – if you see something you like, you should be able to vote immediately. Of course, you can also wait to a summary at the end, as in previous years.
SVT has a positive experience with this voting method in the Swedish national Eurovision selection final “Melodifestivalen”. In addition, there are also our viewers in other parts of the world, not only in Europe, who want to vote, and we want to give them the widest possible opportunity to participate in the creation of the joint contest results. Now they won’t have to set an alarm in the middle of the night to vote!”
