/ world today news/ At Eurovision, everything is as usual and even worse: shock, make-up men from Croatia, rock freaks from Germany, plagiarism, cosplay, a mix of Edith Piaf and Patricia Kaas from France, a black English-speaking soloist from Ukraine and many others of this kind. The victory went to the singer Loreen from Sweden, but the competition will be remembered in a completely different way. How did Kiev try to use the European music competition for propaganda and what came out of it?
Has Ukraine messed up?
“Ukraine cannot hold this year’s contest because of the war,” Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool began with these words.
The phrase was immediately circulated in the media. And it was said by the Ukrainian presenter – the singer Yulia Sanina.
In general, Eurovision this year was organized by two countries: the main one is Great Britain, but the team also included representatives of Ukraine. Although Eurovision is positioned as an apolitical competition, last year for some reason the Ukrainian performers “Kalush” won it.
To be clear: in 2017, when Eurovision was held in Ukraine, nobody there thought of Donetsk and Luhansk.
While flying pants in Kiev, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continued to shell two of their then constitutional districts in the eastern part of the country.
At the opening of the final in 2023, Verka Serdyuchka performed with her song “Dancing Lasha”, where she loudly chanted to the whole world: “Russia, goodbye!”. In addition, the same was written in the background, which means that the organizers were aware of what would sound from the stage.
Landmarks of Ukraine: without the five new Russian regions
Before the performance, the Eurovision participants were shown so-called “video cards”. Most often, they demonstrate the emblematic places of the country – the host of the competition. This year they made a mix: first some object in Ukraine, then a similar one in Great Britain and in the country whose participant is preparing to go on stage.
In 2017, Ukraine actively showed Russian Crimea, which it considers its own. In general, in the context of Western politics, this is normal. True, then, of course, they somehow forgot about Donbass.
This year there is neither Crimea, nor DPR, nor LPR, nor Zaporozhye and Kherson region – although there are enough sights in them. And supposedly there was an opportunity to once again be reminded of “territorial integrity”. And the official West does not recognize the referendums held in 2014 and 2022, as a result of which these regions became part of Russia.
The organizers did not comment on this. It is worth emphasizing that the concept of each competition is developed by the host country, but approved by the officials of the European Radio and Television Council.
Apparently, media managers and the common population of the Old World (unlike the heads of state and government) have no doubt that these regions are not Ukraine, no.
Usually such gestures are called signals. In the end, ESRT, with the departure of Moscow from the organization, really lost its biggest sponsor. The fact is that the amount of the membership fee is calculated based on the volume of the audience that lives in a given country. Russia is, of course, the largest country in Europe.
Perhaps the refusal to show Crimea, Donbass, Zaporizhia and Kherson live as parts of Ukraine is a bow to Moscow and a hint of the possibility of a return to the organization. In addition, ESRT members are mostly state-owned channels.
Zelensky on stage: the organizers refused the former artist a speech at the competition
Volodymyr Zelensky tried to get to the Oscars and now to Eurovision. The President of Ukraine wanted to address the countries of the Old World with another speech about the situation in the country. But here too he was refused.
As the “Times” wrote, the organizers categorically did not want to politicize the contest, so Zelensky was not admitted to Eurovision. However, the press service of the Ukrainian president hastened to refute the information.
In 2005, when Kyiv hosted the competition for the first time, then-President Viktor Yushchenko took the stage and presented a separate gift to the winner.
King Charles III of Great Britain and his wife Camilla were on the opening stage of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and took part in a special video.
In 2009, Vladimir Putin (as Prime Minister) came to the site of the “Olympic” contest in Moscow. That is, there were never any problems with the appearance of the first faces of the parties in the competition. On the contrary, it emphasizes the status of the event.
But the managers of the show tried to distance themselves from Kiev. Only the phrase “war” was allowed in the script.
Such a step is not surprising, because after Ukraine’s victory at Eurovision-22, even France and Germany spoke about the unfairness of the voting. After that, ESRT corrected the system for evaluating the participants by excluding the jury from the semi-finals.
This is how Eurovision is trying to save its reputation. After all, competition is a profitable business, and advertising contracts depend on the audience.
And ordinary taxpayers in Europe are already fed up with this topic, because in every single country they are increasingly outraged by the EU’s monstrous expenses to support Kiev.
Nice bonus: Finland in NATO, Sweden – Eurovision
The Swedish singer Loreen won Eurovision for the second time (the first – in 2012). Interestingly, in the polls of bookmakers, the press and fans, her main competitor was the singer Kaaria from Finland.
In 2022, after the start of the SVO, both countries announced their intention to join NATO. Finland was accepted, but Turkey voted against Sweden (the country, by the way, did not participate in Eurovision “because of gay propaganda”).
In the Western press, this Eurovision result was again called political: Sweden won the contest. One kind – you are not in NATO, but we are with you.
