And everything changes around me suddenly, oh-eh, oh-eh
“Slutty girl”, “slut”, “uneducated”, “uncouth package”, “bad taste”, “opportunist”, “ass”, “irresponsible”, “irresponsible”, “national shame”, are just a few of the things that were social media government and pro-Israel trolls in Marina Satti.
No restraint in the choleric and insulting comments from those who were outraged by her “audacity” to protest with yawns and grimaces against Israel’s participation in Eurovision, while the singer Eden Golan was answering questions from journalists.
And she wasn’t the only one. Next to it, the Dutchman Youst Klein had covered himself with the flag of his country, the Swiss Nemo was staring into the distance, ignoring what the representative of Israel was saying, while until the final, several artists experienced a suffocating restriction on the freedom of expression by the organizers of Eurovision.
Why, everything! The institution is no-politica whenever it suits it. One year it excludes Russia after its attack on Ukraine, while this year it welcomes Israel, despite the ongoing genocide of civilians in Rafah. And even with a political song for the victims of Hamas, even if the lyrics were changed at the last minute to be included in the event.
“You are not ashamed”, our aggrieved compatriots point the finger at Marina. “Who does she think she is?” And above all, “how did he dare to differentiate himself from the national line of our country?” Fortunately she dared to diverge from the European mainstream line of two meters and two stations, we respond on her behalf, along with the thousands protesting in the streets of Malmö for the real shame, which is the participation of a country that exterminates women and children.
And we do it, since ERT was not able to do it, with its ridiculous excuses that did not convince anyone. Because Marina was not just tired, as the decision-makers said, afraid of losing advertising revenue from the possible exclusion of our country. He knew very well what he was doing. And she did it her way by taking the risk of displeasing organizers and sponsors a breath before the final.
She answered diplomatically a few hours before going on stage, that “she had no intention of offending anyone”. Because obviously the matter is not personal. He is a politician in an institution that pretends to be indifferent to politics by banning the Palestinian flag and any expression of solidarity with a horribly trying people.
Forgetting that it is primarily a popular event with millions of viewers, mostly young people, so it cannot ignore popular sentiment every time it goes against its sponsors.
And he’s already paying for it. With more and more deviations from the line of willful blindness, with cancellations of planned major events on the night of the final, such as in London and other European cities, with a generalized feeling of intolerance against the overtly pro-Israel organization.
As for the reactions of the participants of the competition themselves, let the cholerics of the keyboards finally understand that an artist neither shuts up nor thinks in terms of his narrow self-interest. He dares to express himself, to be dissatisfied, and to confront national and European lines, expressing himself alone.
With Marina, with every Marina, against any form of imposition of a political narrative that washes away the perpetrators and is indifferent to the victims.
But also with Marina, who may not have made a “revolution” with her yawning, as some also accused her of not getting up to leave.
Others did not dare utter a single word in full acceptance of the suffocating framework of the organization which has taken a position in favor of Israel in every possible way. So let’s single out those who bounced back and wish them the best of luck tonight.
