Every year,Eurovision galvanizes millions of people around the world, who vote themselves to support the candidate of their country. But the 2020 edition of this high mass of exuberance and kitsch finally had to be canceled, because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Let fans be reassured: if they have been deprived of competitions this year, they will be able to console themselves with … the musical, whose trailer has just fallen! Please note, however: trailer seems to reveal a big part of the plot… If you want to keep the surprise, you had better pass your turn and wait for the exit.

Directed by David Dobkin, it should land on June 26 on Netflix with a luxury cast, including Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrel in the main roles, as well as Pierce Brosnan and Demi Lovato. The film tells the story of Lars (Will Ferrell) and Sigrit (Rachel Mc Adams), two Icelandic troublemakers who attack the legendary contest despite their talent more than questionable. After a humiliating first failure, the duo dubbed Fire Saga will have to find the courage to go up the slope and face the eyes of the public, critics, the rest of the profession again … and even close family members.

All Eurovision codes transposed to the cinema

The sound and visual atmosphere is anchored in the strictest tradition of Eurovision: colorful, extravagant and uninhibited. The whole thing seems to offer a fresh and benevolent look at an often mocked competition, all with a good dose of humor and tasty facial expressions. We would expect no less from a film with Will Ferrell, knowing his legendary sincerity and his crazy humor but always good-natured. In view of the trailer, full of musical references from Wham! At Fleetwood Mac via Simon & Garfunkel, it seems that the directors were keen to pay tribute to music in general and its unifying power. Because after all, that’s the essence of Eurovision: more than music itself, it’s the communion between the artists and the audience that is celebrated and the film seems to reflect this. We can’t wait to see what the end result will look like … provided there is something left to eat after this very exhaustive trailer!
