“Eurovision 2021: Viewership Numbers and Impact of Russia’s Absence”

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest attracted slightly more viewers worldwide than last year. A total of 162 million people watched the live broadcasts of the semi-finals and the final, organizer European Broadcasting Union (EBU) reports.

The edition in Liverpool thus attracted a million more viewers than the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin last year. However, the number of viewers is still a lot smaller than that of previous years.

This is mainly due to the fact that Russia has been excluded from participation since last year because of the invasion of Ukraine. Russia supplied millions of viewers to the festival every year. In 2021, a total of about 183 million people watched the Eurovision Song Contest.

The largest number of viewers this year, about 9.9 million, came from the organizing United Kingdom. The British entry finished 25th out of 26 entrants in the final. In winning Sweden, more than 2.3 million viewers saw Loreen win the trophy for the second time.

In the Netherlands, the first semi-final, in which the Netherlands stranded, attracted 2.1 million viewers. More than 1.8 million Dutch people switched on during the final. That was the smallest number in years.
