Eurostat: Romania and Bulgaria are in first place in the EU in terms of poverty and social exclusion – 2024-09-27 11:57:30

/ world today news/ Romania and Bulgaria share the first place in the European Union in terms of poverty and social exclusion, and in 2014, 40% of the population in these countries was in such a situation, according to a report by the statistical office of the EU Eurostat.

“24.1 percent of the total EU population was at risk of poverty and social exclusion in 2014. In the Czech Republic, 14.8 percent were at risk, in the Netherlands – 16.5 percent, and in Sweden – 16.9, less than half, compared to Romania and Bulgaria,” the Eurostat report points out.

According to the research, there are differences between the 2014 and 2008 data.

“Some countries have made real progress in integrating the most vulnerable members of society. The reduction in the number of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion varies from 0.1 to 5.8 percentage points. The Member States that made the most progress were Poland (down 5.8 percentage points to 25 percent), Romania (down 0.4 percentage points) and Slovakia (down 2.2 percentage points to below 20 percent).

Some countries are registering growth in the number of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion. The countries with the biggest increase are Greece, Spain and Estonia, where the number of people at risk has increased by between 4 and 8 percentage points,” said the report, quoted by the Ager Press agency.

According to a publication by the National Statistics Institute, a quarter of Romanian households, or 32.8 percent, were unable to cover their expenses with their total net monthly income in 2015.

In 2015, 36 percent of households were unable to pay their household bills due to lack of money, and 16.7 percent were unable to pay for electricity.

Moreover, to cope with current expenses, 6.8 percent of Romanian households used their savings, and 6.1 percent borrowed from relatives, friends and others, while 9.3 percent worked extra.
