In the second half of 2022, Poland sent less goods to Russia than a year earlier, but more than just after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Eurostat data quoted by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. Exports in the last three months of the year amounted to EUR 1.2 billion.

“DGP” notes that the value of goods sent to the east has significantly decreased compared to 2021. Exports fell by 44% in 12 months, but instead of falling further, they started to grow.

At the same time, it was higher than in the first half of 2022. This means that grew in relation to what we observed just after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

“In January-February 2022, i.e. at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, exports from Poland to Russia exceeded EUR 600 million per month. in March it fell by half to just over €300 million, and a month later it was even less than €200 million. Western countries then began imposing sanctions on Russia. Some of them concerned restrictions on the export of selected groups of goods. Poland apparently was not their supplier, because since June 2022, the monthly value of exports has increased and systematically exceeds EUR 300 million. In October and November last year amounted to over EUR 400 million” – writes “DGP”.

This meant that throughout 2022 Poland was on the podium when it comes to exports of goods to Russia, which in our case amounted to EUR 4.7 billion (a decrease of over 40% compared to 2022). Only Germany and Italy sold more to Moscow.

What do we ship to Russia? First of all, machines, but also plastics, pharmaceutical products and… shoes. The last two items are exceptions, because in 2022 they recorded an increase in sales to the Russian market. It means that after the outbreak of war, we send more shoes and medicines there.
