The start of the match was marked by nervousness, both teams lost balls. The first shot was sent by midfielder United Scott McTominay, but his attempt from 20 m lacked accuracy. After 10 minutes Juan Foyth could have reduced the lead with a blistering strike from the left wing, had it not been for an excellent block by the visitors’ keeper. Villarreal’s defender had to be treated, but despite the nosebleeds, he continued to fight. With 20 minutes played, Luke Shaw could have brought this one home for Luke Shaw as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high. Villarreal gradually became more daring, Yeremi Pino in particular was full of activity. With 29 minutes played, Dani Parejo nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar.
