A case that raises many questions about security at Europol’s headquarters was brought to light by POLITICO. According to what has become known, everything started last September.
Then it was found that some files with sensitive information of its top officials were missing. It is characteristic that, among other things, the stolen files contained information on the executive director of Europol, Catherine De Bollet.
The files were discovered missing on September 6, but it remains unknown how long ago they were stolen. The files contained personal information that could endanger people close to Europol members.
Some of the lost files resurfaced when a citizen found them abandoned in a public place in The Hague and handed them in to a local police station. However, some others are still missing.
The unanswered questions
Of course, all of the above causes a great impression and questions that must be answered by the authorities. How did someone manage to extract these documents without being noticed. Especially since it was in a warehouse that few people had access to.
In fact, the documents were stored in a safe whose code was known to even fewer. “Given Europol’s role as a law enforcement authority, the disappearance of staff members’ personal files constitutes a serious breach of security and personal data”said the memo sent internally by Europol on September 18.
An internal Europol investigation into the incident is currently ongoing, and the HR manager has been placed on administrative leave.
