jpnn.com, FAULT – Austria has finally become the first European country to abandon the program to live together with COVID-19 and re-impose a total lockdown as the number of new cases on the Blue Continent continues to increase.
Austria’s neighbor Germany is also likely to follow suit, fueling financial market fears of an economic collapse.
A fourth wave of infections has plunged Germany, Europe’s largest economy, into a national emergency, German Health Minister Jens Spahn said.
He urged people to reduce social contact and warned that vaccination alone would not reduce the number of cases.
Austria said it needed the entire population to be vaccinated by February.
About two-thirds of Austrians are fully vaccinated, but that is one of the lowest rates in Western Europe.
Meanwhile, Austria’s COVID-19 infection rate is one of the highest on the continent with 991 cases per 100,000 people a week.
“We haven’t succeeded in convincing enough people to get vaccinated,” Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg told a news conference.
