“This is the largest investment in research in the history of Finnish science and research. It is very important. Several European countries wanted to pay for the construction of a supercomputer here at the old paper mill in Kajaani. We are promoting European co-operation and moving forward on these issues, ”said Petri Honkonen, Minister for Science and Culture of Finland.
The third most powerful facility in the world was the result of cooperation between 10 European countries, and the total cost of the project was around € 200 million.
A quarter of the costs were borne by Finland and the rest by the partners.
Experts say the device has a capacity of 550 petaflops, which means it performs 550 million operations per second, and is 10 million times more powerful than a normal computer.
Margrette Vestagere, Vice-President of the European Commission, called it a great example of the enormous potential of artificial intelligence to improve people’s lives.
The computer will serve scientific advances such as medicine and climate research, and will also be a platform for international collaboration in the development of artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. Specialists from all European countries will be able to apply for its use.
