Whether it’s clothes that you send back to the web shop because they didn’t quite fit, or the smartphone with the cracked camera lens that you can’t just replace: the fate of many written-off products today is still the rubbish dump or the incinerator.
Europe wants to do something about that. Last year, the European Commission proposed introducing a sustainability standard for products on the European market. This specifically concerns products that are quickly thrown away because they are difficult to repair: electronic devices, furniture and clothes. But tires, paints and steel should also comply.
