Europe’s Energy Independence: Rare Metal Discovery and New Supermarket Chain Expansion

Already in the second half of last year, the most pressing question was – will Europe manage to survive the winter without Russian gas supplies? Already in the first half of January, it became clear that the weather was helping Europe, as the warm weather led to an unusually high level of gas storage, which was good news for Europe, but not so good for Russia, which regularly promised to “freeze Europe”. In the end, it didn’t work either.

In mid-January, the Swedish energy company LKAB announced that it managed to find a deposit of more than one million tons of rare metal oxides in Sweden. As officials reported at the time, such a finding could allow not only Sweden, but Europe as a whole to strengthen its energy independence from China and Russia, as well as strengthen efforts to move away from fossil fuels. For now, however, the mining of minerals has not started in these deposits, as all the necessary formalities have yet to be completed.

At the end of January, it became known that a new supermarket chain SPAR will start operating in Latvia, which announced the expansion of the network in Latvia by opening stores in Rēzekne and other cities.
