Europe’s Cultural Capitals 2024: Bad Ischl, Tartu, and Bodø Take the Stage

In 1985 Athens was named Europe’s first city of culture. 1999 the title is in Europe’s cultural capital renamed. This is associated with financial support from the European Commission. The goal: Show the diversity of Europe as part of a one-year program. This is intended to ensure that the cities remain attractive to tourists in the long term.

Anyone who wants to take part must go through a complex and lengthy application process. This year, three cultural capitals from Austria, Estonia and Norway were able to prevail: Bad Ischl, Tartu and Bodø. FluxFM editor introduces you to the three cities and their program for 2024.

With Bodø in Norway, a European cultural capital is located north of the Arctic Circle for the first time. 1,000 events are planned in the city of 53,000 residents and the entire Nordland region. This has changed for the opening on February 3rd Nordland Theatre with the Berlin artist collective Phase 7 teamed up.

Tartu in Estonia is home to the country’s oldest and largest university. The classicist educational buildings and cobblestones characterize the old town. The Capital of Culture year opens on January 26th. Under the motto “Arts of survival”, 1,000 events are scheduled until the end of the year.
