Europe’s best goalscorers at a glance

The Golden Shoe is awarded every year to Europe’s best goalscorer. The goalscorer ranking is based on the goals scored in the respective league. Only players from the highest divisions of the UEFA member associations are taken into account. Since 1997, the goals in the various leagues have been multiplied by the respective country factor.

Goals in the top five leagues are multiplied by a factor of two, while goals from weaker leagues are multiplied by a factor of one or 1.5. Goals from the Dutch Eredivisie or the Turkish Süper Lig, for example, count as 1.5, while goals from the Bundesliga or Premier League count as two.

Harry Kane is going into the season as defending champion. In his first Bundesliga year, the captain of the English national team scored 36 goals. Before Kane, two former Bundesliga strikers, Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski, won the “Golden Shoe” twice in a row. Lewandowski also wore the FCB jersey, while Haaland already wore the Skyblues jersey.

At the moment, the top of the goal-scoring race is still peppered with unknown names – who mainly play in Scandinavia. The season has already started there, as the games are played in the calendar year. Accordingly, the strikers from Norway, Estonia and Co. initially have an advantage – but this will balance out again over the course of the round. It is already clear that Erling Haaland is a very big name at the top.
