European Winter Transfer Window 2024: Record Spending and Potential Signings in Top Leagues

New year, new transfer luck! The winter transfer window has been open in Germany and some other top European leagues such as England and France since January 1st. In Italy and Spain, player changes can take place from January 2nd.

In Germany, as is often the case, the focus is particularly on FC Bayern. As is well known, Thomas Tuchel is pushing for reinforcements for his relatively thin squad and the Munich team are probably willing to spend good money on new additions to the defense and/or defensive midfield.

Names like Joao Palhinha (Fulham FC), Ronald Araujo (FC Barcelona) and Raphael Varane (Manchester United) appear in the newspapers.

Although the market is considered particularly challenging in winter, almost 1.46 billion euros were spent worldwide in January 2023 – a record! The English Premier League clubs alone spent around 835 million euros.

The clubs now have 30 days to exceed this record again if necessary. In the Bundesliga (Germany), the Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy) and Ligue 1 (France), the winter transfer window for new arrivals closes on February 1, 2024.

Players can still be transferred beyond February 1st – but only to countries whose transfer windows are open longer. These include Austria (February 6th) and Turkey (deadline February 9th), where players could still be sold or loaned out.

And then there is also Saudi Arabia, where Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mané are already hunting for goals and the money is known to be very loose.

Players can also be signed there again from January 1st and until January 31st. Who is heading to the desert this time?
