Until September 30th, the European Week of Sport in Frankfurt also invites you to try out different sports. Regardless, the clubs are considering how they can get more people moving again after Corona.
Sophie Scheder has mastered the most complicated movements in her successful artistic gymnastics career. But before the Olympic bronze medalist on the uneven bars joined the small crowd dancing into the night on the roof of Frankfurt’s Skyline Plaza shopping center on Saturday evening to the sounds of hip-hop and salsa, she appeared a little nervous. “I have never made anything like this public before,” said the 26-year-old from Wolfsburg. “I have no idea how I’m going to do. It’s probably the looseness that’s causing me the biggest problem.” After all, she’s used to maintaining maximum tension in all body positions.
Either way: fun should be the focus, not only at the dance party at the opening of the European Week of Sport, for which the aspiring qualified trainer Scheder is an ambassador, but also at the numerous other offers that run until September 30th are on the extensive program. Project manager Claudia Mörtzsch from the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB), the national coordinator of the BeActive Week, estimates the number of workshops, trial courses and free offers in this country to be more than 1,000 in total. The European Commission launched the campaign for the first time in 2015; 40 countries are now taking part. The aim is to encourage people of all ages to lead a more active and therefore healthier life. One focus has always been on children, for whom there are special events in schools and kindergartens. Last year, as chairman Roland Frischkorn confirmed, the Frankfurt sports district also focused on getting women interested in playing and gymnastics in sports clubs again. During the pandemic, large numbers of mothers in particular opted out because of growing stress, such as homeschooling their sons and daughters.
