The European Union also warns video platform YouTube that it must guard against “illegal material and disinformation”. Since the flood of fake news that erupted after Hamas’ bloody attack on Israel, Brussels has also turned to X, Meta and TikTok.
YouTube bears a “special responsibility” because so many children and young people use the platform, says responsible European Commissioner Thierry Breton in a letter to Sundar Pichai, the CEO of parent company Alphabet. The American company must protect them against “violent images of hostage situations and other revealing videos”, he writes. YouTube must also clearly distinguish news from terrorist propaganda. If YouTube does not comply with European rules, it can expect fines, Breton threatens.
The European Commissioner also immediately reminded the company of the upcoming elections in the Netherlands and other European countries. YouTube must take action to prevent these from being manipulated. With so-called deepfakes, for example, videos in which politicians or others say or do things that they have never said or done in reality.
