European Union Wants to Create Public Facilities for Cell Phone Chargers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The European Union plans to create a dedicated charging station (charging) various brands of smartphones, tablets and headphones. The proposal for this project was presented on Thursday, September 23, 2021 and will be a world first and will impact smartphone manufacturers such as the iPhone and its rivals.

The plan has been in the works for more than 10 years, with European Union officials calling for it to be environmentally beneficial and could save smartphone users up to 250 million euros (Rp 4.1 trillion).

In a proposal put forward by the European Union Commission, the USB-C connector will be standardized for all types of smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and video game consoles. Later, cell phone chargers will be sold separately from the cellphone.

The European Union Commission said the plan was not targeting Apple and was only acting because many companies were not unanimous in solving a solution despite nearly a decade of negotiations.

Apple rejected the proposal.

“We are still wary of the strict rules requiring one form of connector (for charging) cell phone) can hinder innovation, not encourage it, which will ultimately hurt consumers in Europe and around the world,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple also voiced concern with the transition period given only 24 months for companies for the law on this subject once it is adopted.
