Berlin, Dec 4.- Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer declared that the European Union needs an arsenal of weapons to be able to guarantee nuclear deterrence.
In an interview with Die Zeit published this Sunday, the historic leader of the Greens party maintained that, in light of the conflict in Ukraine, the conclusion can be drawn that Europeans need to arm themselves. “We must restore our deterrence capacity,” he defended.
In this context, the former minister clarified that Germany should not have nuclear bombs, but the community bloc should have them. “The EU needs its nuclear deterrent,” he stressed.
After the interviewer reminded him of the Greens’ opposition to nuclear weapons since their founding in 1980, Fischer responded that “the world has changed.” “I hope that the United States and Europe remain connected. But what will happen if Donald Trump is re-elected? Also in view of this scenario, Europe must seriously ask the question,” he added.
At the same time, Fischer considers that it would be “too easy” to see the nuclear arsenal of the United Kingdom and France “as a response to the change in the situation.” But the priority is first the deterrence capacity in the conventional sphere. That is the lesson that Ukraine teaches us,” he concluded. (Text and photo: Actualidad RT)
