“We are targeting those who manipulate information (..) as part of Russia’s broader hybrid war campaign against the EU and its member states,” announced the EU’s top representative for foreign affairs, Giuseppe Borel.
The EU states that the purpose of the “Last Reliable News” disinformation campaign is to “distort information and spread propaganda to support Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.”
In its framework, fake websites of Western national media and governments were used.
France announced in June that it had uncovered a vast Russian disinformation operation that mimicked the websites of leading French newspapers and German publications.
The EU’s “blacklist” includes InfoRos, a covert structure of the Russian military intelligence service GRU, posing as a news agency, and its three founders.
“InfoRos” has created 270 fake websites for spreading propaganda.
The “non-governmental” organization “UN Dialog” linked to the administration of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and two IT companies involved in the disinformation campaign are subject to sanctions.
