European Union Foreign Affairs Council Discusses Ukraine’s Need for United Support

Ukraine needs united military, financial and political support from the European Union (EU), participating in the EU Foreign Affairs Council today, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņš (JV).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs the agency LETA that today Kariņš participated in the EU Foreign Affairs Council, whose agenda included the EU’s further support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, the situation in Israel and the Middle East, as well as the discussion of the Sahil region in Africa.

The Council began with an informal exchange of views with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleb, to whom Kariņš assured Latvia’s firm support.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs points out that the discussion on Ukraine is taking place at a crucial moment and that it is essential for the EU to make decisions on strategic EU financial and military assistance to Ukraine, as well as the initiation of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. It is a matter of EU security – Ukraine, continuing its heroic struggle against Russian imperialism, is fighting for the freedom and security of the whole of Europe.

Commenting on the current events in the Middle East, Kariņš urged to focus on the two-state solution, clearly stating that this issue should be the central priority of the EU agenda, towards which all our efforts should be directed.

In the discussion about Sahil, the foreign minister called for consideration of how to maintain meaningful EU influence, taking into account the growing spread of Russia’s cultured narrative in the region.
