On December 13, a trade union demonstration will take place in Brussels against European austerity measures. This is an initiative of the European trade union federation ETUC in which the three major Belgian trade unions will also participate.
The unions oppose strict austerity rules in Europe. “Workers need public investments in education, health care, adjusted wages and a sustainable future,” it said.
According to ABVV chairman Thierry Bodson, there is a threat of austerity measures that would result in less investment in public and social services. The unions are also demanding a European solidarity mechanism, as was installed after the corona pandemic, to absorb the economic shock.
According to Bodson, delegations from various countries are coming to the demonstration, including France, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria. Although there has been no call for a strike, it cannot be ruled out that there will be disruption to public transport in Brussels.
