European supermarkets threaten to boycott Brazilian agricultural products | Environment

In an open letter Wednesday, they refer to a recent bill in which the private occupation of public land would be legalized. “This is an unprecedented threat to the Amazon forest, it sounds.

The letter is addressed to members of the Brazilian Parliament. “The Amazon Rainforest is an essential part of the global ecosystem (…) essential for the security of our planet and a vital element for the prosperous future of Brazilians and society as a whole”. The signatories ask not to approve the bill.

A boycott would hurt Brazil, because the country is the largest individual exporter of agricultural products to the European Union, at a whopping $ 25 billion in 2020. This includes beef, soybeans and coffee.

The call from European companies is supported by the NGO Imazon.

Last year, 8,426 km2 of the Amazon rainforest was already destroyed, partly as a result of numerous forest fires. The number of fires was more than 60 percent higher than the year before.
