European security architecture cannot be restored without changes in Russia / Article

According to him, Russia has violated the rules of the game in a number of international organizations and only if the nature of the Russian regime changes, the rules will not be broken in the future and it will be possible to restart the European security architecture.

MEP Sikorski: European security architecture cannot be restored without changes in Russia

“For me, security architecture means following the rules. We previously had common rules in various organizations with Russia. For example, the UN Security Council was supposed to be the guardian of the peace, not the defender of the war-monger. Russia has broken the rules here. Russia has also violated them in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe. The problem with restoring predictable order lies in the nature of the Russian regime, which has broken these rules. I do not think that architecture cannot be renewed without changes in Russia. If Ukraine wins and there is a change in Russia, it can be a constitutional moment where institutions like the UN Security Council can begin to reflect changes in the balance,” Sikorski said at the conference.

CONTEXT

The Munich Security Conference takes place from February 17 to 19. The conference is expected to seek answers to the questions – what was the basis for Russia’s repeated invasion of Ukraine and why do many countries hesitate to support Ukraine and condemn Russia? It is also discussed how to hold Russia accountable for what it is doing in Ukraine, and what consequences this war has had on the global economy.

More than 40 heads of state and government and 90 ministers are taking part in the conference in the Bavarian capital this year.
