On Tuesday, the option for each EU member state to stop importing Russian LNG became a little more concrete through a vote in the European Parliament. Belgium should soon be able to benefit from this. But if it were up to Tinne van der Straeten, there is a risk that our country will not make use of it. Belgium would therefore remain one of the main gateways for Russian LNG to Europe.
Why is this important?
While European imports of Russian natural gas (by pipeline) have fallen sharply since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, imports of Russian LNG (by ship) have increased. Belgium is the third largest importer of LNG in Europe. It says it cannot stop this process, bound by contracts. There are currently no sanctions against Russian gas at European level.
In the news: An important vote on Russian LNG.
- The European Parliament’s Energy Committee on Tuesday approved a raft of rules for the reform of gas markets.
- One of the approved measures concerns the import of Russian LNG. Each Member State should be able to decide for itself whether or not to discontinue this.
