Chairman of the European People’s Party (EPP; member of the European Parliament) Manfred Weber suggested that the European Parliament urgently vote for increasing the production of weapons and ammunition for Ukraine. According to him, the deliveries should be coordinated this month.
“Given the urgent need to help Ukraine replenish its ammunition stocks, the EPP group would like to request an urgent procedure in accordance with Rule 163 of the Rules of Procedure of Parliament,” says Mr. Weber in a letter to the European Parliament, the text of which is quoted Politico.
On May 2, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the development of a law in support of increasing the production of ammunition in Europe. The offer includes funding from the EU budget of €500 million. It is supposed to send Ukraine 1 million shells during the year.
MEPs are due to discuss the bill today, May 8. Manfred Weber urges MPs to vote in favor of the fast track procedure so that the final proposal can be agreed before the end of May.
On April 13, the European Council approved a plan to supply Ukraine with €1 billion worth of ammunition through the Peace Fund. In March, the volume of the fund was increased twice – by a total of more than € 4 billion – to cover the cost of supplying weapons to Kyiv.
