On Wednesday, the European Parliament (EP) will vote on a report that recommends a series of amendments to the EU treaties, including the controversial proposal to abandon the unanimous vote on several key issues.
All MEPs representing Tusk’s Civic Coalition (CO) will vote against the approval of this report.
“Those legislators who cooperate with me will vote against,” Tusk declared, admitting, however, that individual deviations could always happen and that he could not guarantee voting discipline.
He pointed out that this is not skepticism towards deeper European integration, but doubts about some of the proposals included in the report and the pace of change.
“Europe needs repair in many aspects,” added the former President of the European Council.
However, he warned that the “most stupid way” to achieve change is to fall into naive “euro-enthusiasm”, which was one of the causes of Brexit.
“The project prepared by the European Parliament certainly (..) does not correspond to what, in my opinion, reflects the spirit of the age and the real needs of the EU,” added Tusk.
“Never before have we needed a stronger and more capable European Union, facing threats, facing war right next to us. But the document that will be voted on, instead of meeting these needs, weakens the European community,” said the EP deputy Andrzej Halickis, representing the “Civil Platform” (PO) party, which forms the core of KO.
Until now, Poland’s ruling party, the national conservative “Law and Justice” (PiS), has expressed categorical opposition to any amendments to the EU treaties, and after the October elections, many in Brussels hoped that if the opposition came to power, Warsaw would become more tolerant.
However, the web publication “Euractiv” warned in advance that the amendments to the EU treaty are not the only issues on which KO and PiS have a similar position.
One example is Warsaw’s rejection of the illegal immigration redistribution scheme that Brussels is trying to impose on member states.
