The European People’s Party, of which the ND is a member, and all the far-right groups of the European Parliament, voted for the suspension of the Regulation against global deforestation.
At the time of the climate crisis, to which the destruction of the oxygen lungs of the world contributes the most, the right-wing and far-right alliance with a marginal majority succeeded in overturning the EU Regulation that was to enter into force on December 30, 2024.
The four SYRIZA MEPs are complaining of serious technical problems in the scandalous vote and the LEFT political group is asking for it to be repeated.
The joint announcement of the 4 MEPs of SYRIZA-PS:
“Alliance of right and extreme right against forest protection. They voted to suspend the Global Deforestation Regulation and weaken its content.
With the far-right and ultra-conservatives as allies, the European People’s Party succeeded in sabotaging the EU Regulation against global deforestation which was a landmark for the protection of forests and their biodiversity worldwide.
In the vote that took place on Thursday, November 14 in the European Parliament, the EPP, together with all the far-right wings, voted to suspend the application of the Regulation for one year and, at the same time, voted for amendments that weaken its protective provisions.
The Regulation was supposed to enter into force on December 30, 2024, however the Commission decided to postpone its implementation. The EPP seized the opportunity and managed to further weaken the Regulation with marginal majorities – and the help of the neo-Nazi AfD and Orbán’s Fidesz. The right-far-right alliance managed to introduce exceptions and deviations from the provisions that provide that a number of products can only be imported into the EU if it can be proven that they are not linked to deforested areas, mainly the Amazon, which is the largest oxygen lung on the planet.
The new devastating blow to the climate came in a session with serious technical problems during the vote in the plenary chamber and with narrow majorities, with the LEFT political group calling for a repeat vote.
This scandalous vote is only a first sample of what will follow in the next five years after the conscious choice of the EPP to ally with the extreme right and the ultra-conservatives”.
