Today the European Parliament is investigating the case of Latvian MP Tatyana Zhdanok, who is suspected of Russian espionage. At the same time, her compatriots believe that there are others who work in favor of the terrorist country.
“There are other MEPs who consciously serve Russia’s interests,” Sandra Kalniete, Roberts Zile and Ivars Ijabs of the center-right European People’s Party, the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists and the liberal Renaissance party wrote in a letter.
In particular, the deputies believe that the Greens/EFA group, from which Zhdanok was excluded, should bear some responsibility for long-term cooperation, financial support and information exchange with the suspect.
On Tuesday, the Greens/EFA group issued a statement saying it was “deeply concerned” by the allegations and asked that Zhdanok be banned from serving in parliament pending an investigation.
Zhdanok incident
This Monday, January 29, the European Parliament launched an investigation into Latvian MP Zhdanok after the independent Russian investigative newspaper Insider reported that she had worked for years as an agent of the Russian intelligence services.
The deputy, for his part, denies these accusations.
At the same time, she was one of 13 members of the European Parliament who voted against a resolution in March 2022 condemning Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. She was then expelled from the Greens/EFA group.
