The European Parliament wants to strengthen the European Health Union and the resilience of national health systems in view of future challenges.
It states that over the past year the European Parliament’s special committee on the COVID-19 pandemic (COVI) has analyzed the consequences of the crisis, assessed the effectiveness of EU and national measures and made specific recommendations to address gaps.
Today, the EP adopted the text with 385 votes “for”, 193 votes “against” and 63 votes “abstentions”.
MEPs outlined a clear roadmap for future action in four main areas: health, democracy and fundamental rights, social and economic aspects, and a global response to the pandemic.
Among the key proposals are strengthening the EU’s strategic autonomy on medicines, transparency in joint procurement activities and stronger parliamentary control at both EU and national level on emergency legislation.
MEPs are also urging the EU to make the most of recovery funding to strengthen the single market. It also calls for better global coordination in relation to the upcoming international treaty on pandemic preparedness and response.
In March last year, the EP set up a Special Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned and Recommendations for the Future (COVI), which assessed both the impact on health systems and the vaccination campaign, as well as the wider socio-economic impact, the impact on the principles of the rule of law and democracy and the international response to the pandemic.
It is noted that with the adoption of this report, the EP meets the expectations of citizens to strengthen the sustainability of health systems and the competitiveness of the EU, as well as to ensure equal access to health care for all.
