European market in September 2021: Big drop in sales, but the Koreans scored

New car registrations in Europe fell by a quarter year on year during September. However, Korean brands coped with the problems of the automotive industry, for example, Kia grew by 56.2% year-on-year.

The European new car market continues to face the consequences of the covid-19 pandemic and, in particular, current shortage of production components, especially chips. This means that in September 2021, only 972,723 new cars were registered in Europe, 25.2% less than a year ago. This is according to statistics published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

It should be noted that the fact that last September was unusually strong in terms of registrations also spoke to a significant year-on-year decline, according to ACEA, 1,300,048 cars were registered in europe in september 2020, it was the best September since 2017, when even 1,466,243 cars were registered on the old continent. This was a consequence of the gradual release following coronavirus measures from the second quarter of 2020, when previously ordered cars were finally delivered, which customers were waiting for, for example due to production interruptions caused by the Chinese flu pandemic.

At the same time, however, current sales are strongly influenced by the current shortage of production parts. There is talk mainly of missing silicon microchips, but manufacturers also largely lack, for example, plastic granules. That’s why almost all carmakers had to stop production again this year – because cars simply have nothing to produce from. There are simply no new cars on the market. Gradually, stocks are also selling out.
