The coronavirus pandemic and the associated reduction in the distribution and sales of new cars means that manufacturers continue to experience relatively turbulent times. This brings with it often unexpected results in car sales. This was also true in February, when Peugeot took the top two positions in the model sales rankings. This follows from the statistics of the analytical company JATO Dynamics.
The best-selling car in Europe in February 2021 thus became the Peugeot 208 with 18,375 registered units. At the same time, the small hatchback reached the highest position despite a year-on-year drop in registrations of 12%. Peugeot 2008 finished second, jumping by 52% year-on-year to 17,120 registrations. This is an incredible success during the coronavirus pandemic, although last year’s intergenerational replacement of this small SUV is also a sign.
Either way, this is the first time since February 2008 that Peugeot has boasted the best-selling car in Europe. Years ago, the 207 model, the former predecessor of the 208, boasted of this title. According to the Best Selling Cars Blog dealing with car sales, this is probably the first time that Peugeot has two models at the top of the old continent’s most sought-after cars.
In addition, Peugeot’s success means that the long-standing European sales leader, Volkswagen Golf, has not yet reached the top position this year. In January 2021, according to JATO Dynamics statistics, the best-selling car in Europe was surprisingly the Toyota Yaris. It remains high in February, when its 15,467 registrations were seven percent more than a year ago. The new generation is doing so well in the store so far. After all, it is also praised by experts when it received the title of European Car of the Year 2021.

By the way, Volkswagen Golf finished third in the February rankings, with 16,185 registrations, which was 34% less than a year ago. He can already sign the sales the lack of chips that have plagued Volkswagen in recent weeks.
The February statistics also surprise the fifth place of the Fiat Panda, or the tenth place of the Volkswagen T-Roc, which is nicknamed the “Golf SUV” due to its size. That it would take over part of the sales of the classic compact? By the way, the Škoda Octavia finished ninth with 14,554 registrations, while the year-on-year decline of two percent is a great result in the overall market.
As for alternative drives, Tesla Model 3 led among electric cars in February, with a year-on-year jump of 55%. The second was followed by the Volkswagen ID.3. The electric Fiat 500 then thrives, which was already the eighth most popular electric vehicle in Europe in February. Among the plug-in hybrids, the Volvo XC40 leads with a year-on-year jump of 323%, proving the growing emphasis of the Swedish brand on this type of drive. The second is followed by the Peugeot 3008 PHEV, which is further proof of a successful month for this French brand.
