Booming business at low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet ensured that passenger numbers at European airports in the first half of the year were as high as before the corona pandemic. The industry can “finally” put the crisis behind it, the Association of European Airports ACI Europe welcomed the development.

Low-cost airlines in particular recorded high passenger numbers at holiday destinations – domestic and business flights declined.

In Albania, with its Adriatic coast, passenger numbers exploded by a full 243 percent in June this year compared to the same period five years ago, according to the association, “driven by the expansion of ultra-low-cost airlines.”

Airports in holiday countries such as Greece (+ 23.9 percent), Portugal (+ 14.2 percent) and Croatia (+ 13.6 percent) also saw significant growth.

In Germany, however, passenger numbers fell by 17 percent compared to the first half of 2019 before the pandemic. According to the association, the reason for this is the reduced number of domestic flights and business trips, which were replaced by video conferences or train journeys.

According to the ACI Europe association, Memmingen Airport in southern Bavaria, from which Ryanair, Wizz Air and the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings, among others, take off, recorded a large increase in passenger numbers. The number of passengers there rose by 73.7 percent compared to the first half of the year five years ago.

Similar figures were recorded by remote low-cost airports such as Beauvais in France (plus 62.4 percent) or Bergamo (plus 30.1 percent) in Italy.

Overall, the number of passengers at European airports in the first half of the year was 0.4 percent higher than before the pandemic. The figures from the ACI Europe association take into account 500 airports in a total of 55 countries, including the EU states as well as countries such as Turkey, Israel and Russia. This year, ACI Europe is expecting the “best summer ever in terms of passenger numbers,” said association head Olivier Jankovec.
