European Leaders Warn of Trump Presidency Threat to Democracy and Sovereignty

“As Europeans, we should not be afraid that Trump can become the next president of the United States. We have to be ready for it,” he warned the audience in his address to the European Parliament.

The Prime Minister announced that “Europe must become more self-confident, stronger and more sovereign”.

The politician’s comments echo former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s famous speech after Trump became US president, when she warned that Europe could not rely solely on its allies.

French European Commissioner Thierry Breton also revealed in a recent interview that “Trump said in a private conversation in 2020 that he would never provide aid to Europe in case someone attacked it”.

But Katarina Barley, a member of the German European Parliament, said on the microblogging site “X” that “Trump is a person who does not hide his contempt for democracy.”

“The German government now has to prepare more intensively than before for Trump’s return to the White House. Among other things, this means that we must increase our weapons production so that Ukraine can defend itself against a Russian attack, even without the help of the United States. The freedom of Europe depends on it,” said another German politician, Norbert Rotgens, in an interview with the newspaper “Tagesspiegel”.

It has already been reported that Trump has won the Iowa Republican primary with a significant majority of votes. With Iowa providing just under 2% of the delegates that go into the national Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump’s victory in Iowa is not yet a victory.

Addressing voters, he claimed that if elected as the next US president, he would stop the war in Ukraine within 24 hours.

“I know Putin and Zelensky well. The conflict can be resolved very quickly,” said the politician.

Two criminal trials have been initiated against Trump since the end of his term as president, and he has also been charged with 91 felonies, including conspiracy to influence the results of the 2020 election, and falsifying records related to hush money paid to a porn star.
