The European High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said today that Israel financed the creation of the Palestinian radical group Hamas in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian Authority, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected accusations by his opponents in Israel and some world media that his government has been supporting the Hamas movement in Gaza for years.
“Yes, Hamas was funded by the government of Israel in an attempt to weaken the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority,” Borrell said during a speech at the University of Valladolid, without elaborating.
