European gas price shoots up 60 percent to new record

The European gas price rose to a new record on Wednesday. On the leading stock exchange in Amsterdam, the price shot up to 60 percent to 194 euros per megawatt hour. This was caused by concerns about the supply of sufficient gas. For example, sanctions on Russian gas are a possibility, as are damage to pipelines in Ukraine. At the previous peak in December, gas was worth just under 181 euros per megawatt hour.

For the time being, the flow of Russian gas to Europe has not been interrupted and deliveries are even higher than before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the stock exchanges trade in so-called futures, contracts for gas that will be delivered in the coming months. The price that rose sharply was the price for delivery in April.

After the sharp increase, the gas price dropped significantly again, to just above 156 euros per megawatt hour. Meanwhile, around 174 euros per megawatt hour has to be paid for april-futures.
