European Football Championship as a risk | Insurance | 06/09/2021

The time will come on June 11th. After a postponement of one year due to the corona pandemic, the European Football Championship begins. Whether you can enjoy the event in full length also depends in part on special care in everyday life, as a look at the insurance statistics shows.

In an analysis of the past 20 years, Wiener Städtische found that during major football events there are an average of eight percent more accidents than normal times. “Especially in comprehensive insurance, we recorded a significant increase during an EM or World Cup with an average of eleven percent more vehicle damage. Lack of concentration and carelessness while driving and the resulting risk situations are the main drivers,” says Doris Wendler, CEO of Wiener Urban insurance. Across Austria, the insurance registers an average of 290 vehicle damage per match day.

Even more damage when participating in Austria
The number of accidents is even higher when the Austrian team has managed to take part in the competition. During the last European Football Championship in France in 2016, there were around 8,400 vehicle damage – also due to Austria’s participation. That is over 16 percent more than during Euro 2012 in Ukraine, where Austria was not there. Two thirds of all motor vehicle accidents during major soccer events are caused by men. However, this is no different from the rest of the world.

There is also the increased risk of falling victim to a break-in as a football fan. During soccer world and European championships, the number of break-ins usually increases by more than ten percent. Public viewings and football parties ensure vacant houses and apartments during the season and are a tempting offer for burglars. The risk should be lower this time due to the corona pandemic and limited events. (eml)
