European Film Awards 2021 awarded. “Quo Vadis, Aida?” Jasmili Zbanic is the best film

34. European Film Awards awarded. A ceremonial gala was held in Berlin. The best film of the year was “Quo Vadis, Aida?” Jasmila Zbanic. Jasna Djuricic, who starred in it, received the award for Best Actress of the Year. The winner in the category of the best European actor of the year was Anthony Hopkins, appreciated for his performance in “Father”.

“Quo Vadis, Aida?” Jasmili Zbanic tells the story of the war from the perspective of the title translator living in Srebrenica, working for the United Nations. The picture, honored in 2020 at the festival in Venice with the award of the Catholic Organization of Cinematography and Audiovisual Art (SIGNIS), was made in co-production of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Germany, Poland, France, Norway, Turkey, Romania and the Netherlands. The Polish producer is Ewa Puszczyńska (“Ida”, “Cold War”). Antoni Komasa-Łazarkiewicz is responsible for the music.

The Bosnian director of the film, Jasmila Zbanic, won the European Film Award in the Best Director category.

Besides “Quo Vadis, Aida?” The nominees for the European Film Award in the category of the best European film were: “Compartment No. 6” by Juho Kuosmanen, “Father” by Florian Zeller, “The Hand of God” by Paolo Sorrentino and “Titane” by Julia Ducournau.

Appearing in “Quo Vadis, Aida?” Jasna Djuricic received the award for Best Actress of the Year. The winner in the category of the best European actor of the year was Anthony Hopkins, appreciated for his performance in “Father”. Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton, in turn, received an award for the script for this film.

Other awards

Earlier, the statuette in the European Discovery of the Year category (Prix FIPRESCI) was awarded to Emerald Fennell for “Promising. Young. Woman”. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Márta Mészáros, Hungarian director of, among others, “Nine Months”, “Northern Lights” and “Adoption”, honored with a Golden Bear at the 25th Berlin Festival.

The award for the European contribution to world cinema was collected by Susanne Bier, the creator of, among others, “Weddings in Sorrento” and “In a better world”. The best European comedy of the year was “Ninjababy” by Yngvild Sve Flikke. Olga Lucovnicova’s “My Uncle Tudor” won the Best Short Film category.

During the ceremony, the winner in the Best Animated Film category was also announced. It was “Flee” by Jonas Poher Rasmussen. Steve McQueen, the creator of the anthological series “Mały Ax”, was appreciated for innovative storytelling. Meanwhile, the European Universities Prize (EUFA) went to “Flee” by Jonas Poher Rasmussen.

European Film Awards

The European Film Awards (EFA) are the most important awards on the Old Continent, the equivalent of the American Oscars, awarded by filmmakers associated with the European Film Academy. They were presented for the first time in 1988. The statuette for the best film was then awarded to Krzysztof Kieślowski for “A Short Film About Killing”. In recent years, awards have been received by, among others, Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman for the Polish-British animation “Twój Vincent”, Anna Zamecka for the documentary “Communion” and Paweł Pawlikowski for “Cold War”.

Polish director Agnieszka Holland, who is there, appeared at the gala president of the European Film Academy, awarding these awards.
