European electricity prices spike after problems with French nuclear power plants

Electricity prices in Western Europe have risen even higher today than they have been in recent months. To be clear: these are wholesale prices, the prices that energy suppliers pay to producers.

An acute cause of today’s price increase is a problem at two French nuclear power plants. Electricity producer Electricité de France (EDF) has shut down those two plants because defects have been identified at one of the two plants, in Civaux, in central France.
