In the summer of 2018, five diplomats were on a secret mission for the EU. With their own eyes, they were to see what was happening in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. In the last year, there had been strong accusations that Uighurs were being held in internment camps against their will. Until now, China had denied that the camps existed at all.
Now the EU wanted to go to the ground and do its own research. A Finn, a German, a Frenchman, a Dutchman and one from Malta were sent away. The visit was highly unofficial. China had not been notified, and diplomats had not agreed on any meetings. Still, the Chinese found out about the trip. And they went to great lengths to sabotage the mission.
