European Covid Explodes Despite Vaccine ‘Flood’, This is the culprit

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Europe is now experiencing another spike in Covid-19 cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) called there was a worrying resurgence, saying “once again Europe is the epicenter of the pandemic”.

WHO Europe, which covers 53 European and Central Asian countries, said Covid-19 had increased 55% in the past four weeks. Even the new death toll will reach 500,000 in February 2022.

It’s not just Britain and Russia whose cases have exploded since October, cases in other countries that were initially low have also increased. WHO even said the current speed (of transmission of Covid-19) in 53 countries was very worrying.

Germany, for example, experienced a severe increase is Germany. The Panzer Country’s Covid-19 infection even broke the record set in December 2020.

Germany’s disease control agency, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), reported 33,949 new cases in one day, Thursday (4/11/2021). The data comes a day after Health Minister Jens Spahn said that Germany was living with a pandemic in which many people had not been vaccinated and that there would be a “maximum strength” fourth wave of the virus.

The Netherlands has also seen an increase in Covid-19 cases. The country recorded 10,214 cases yesterday, a record high for all of 2021 after the December 2022 rise.

The country also recorded 19 new deaths, bringing the death toll related to Covid-19 to 11,419. There were 56,746 active cases.

WHO Emergency Director Mike Ryan revealed the culprit. According to him, several European countries have less than optimal vaccination coverage even though there are many doses available.

“This is a warning to the world to see what happens in Europe despite the availability of (many) vaccinations,” Ryan told a news conference. Reuters, Saturday (6/11/2021).

Meanwhile, WHO Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Kluge, said that vaccination had not been maximized, exacerbated by the easing of social restrictions that had been carried out. In addition, the new mutation of the Delta variant is also another cause.

Vaccine campaigns in Europe are very slow including boosters. The start of winter is also another culprit, where the virus is more easily spread to many people gathered indoors.

Last week, the WHO recorded 1.8 million new cases and 24,000 reported deaths. Cases increased 6% and deaths rose 12%, compared to the previous week.

“The region accounted for 59% of all cases globally and 48% of deaths reported last week,” he added.
