Several European countries summoned Russian diplomats on Monday following the death of Alexei Navalny in a prison camp in northern Russia. Western countries blame Russian authorities for the death of the prominent opposition leader.
French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné said during a visit to Argentina that the Russian ambassador would be summoned to Paris. In Norway, the most senior Russian diplomat in the country has been summoned “for a discussion” about Navalny’s death, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry said.
Earlier in the day, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands said they had summoned Russian diplomats. London already did that on Friday evening.
The leading opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin died on Friday, February 16, in the ‘Polar Wolf’ prison camp in northern Russia. He served a long prison sentence there because of his political activism. The exact cause of death is still under investigation. Something that, according to the Russian authorities, could take weeks. Navalny’s team is demanding that his body be returned to his family.
Western countries unanimously blame Russian authorities for his death. A month before Russian presidential elections, which are expected to strengthen Putin’s grip on power, the opposition has lost its most prominent leader.
